Install the pressure line and return hoses to the outside of the pump unit, then install the outside wires and reattach the tank with the straps and refasten the fuel-filler neck to the body. I guess the sender was worth the price but not the additional headaches. Is there an issue with the power and ground to the pump? Mine turned out to be the pump, had to drop the tank and enjoy a day crawling around in the dirt. Used a jack to hold up the tank, a buddy to hold up the back side and move it around enough where I could finally get the straps on the bolts. I think I posted all the exact parts on anoth … er post.
There are numerous ways of getting to the pump. Once this is done, raise the rear end of your truck onto jack stands and drain the fuel tank into a suitable container obviously, this is a job that is made easier if you do not have a full tank! This Suburban is equipped with dual tanks and as such has two relay switches, primary and secondary, both of which are located at the main fuse box in the engine bay, that power up the respective fuel pumps. Some are mounted to a hole in the tank with a matching round plate that has five or six screws. I had to take tank out again to replace. Then check the area under the tank straps. Place the rags over the filter and line wh … ile ur are loosening the nut. I have removed lots of tanks to do this for in the past 15 yrs or so, and found this last option a great one, as on the lumina's, without a proper tool, you have to drop the rear axle assembly, pain in the buttux. Begin by inspecting and cleaning the area where the pump unit attaches to the tank. And I believe fuses as well. The question was in reference to the fuel pump relay and not the pump.
I'm about 99% sure that it is in the gas tank. It is in the panel close to your left knee when sitting. If these items are not with the kit, it's a good idea to replace them anyway. You will find the fuel pump assembly on top of the fuel tank. Not very happy about it and feel I should get half of what I paid refunded. It should be one of these.
Fuel fuse and relay location. In order to change the fuel pump on a 1991 Chevy 1500 truck, you will need to remove the fuel tank because the pump is located inside it. After loosening the ring, or removing the screws, carefully lift the pump and sender out of the tank, being careful not to allow dirt and gasket material to fall into the tank. On my 1995 they are both identical. The relay is not near the fuse panel in a 91 coupe. An impact wrench would help. The reason I was replacing the pump was the lines on the sender were rusted badly. It may come updated with a new wiring connector to fix the old ones problem. The unit will lift out with the fuel sending unit attached.
